The DMP panels are IP-based, as are the NetBox appliances, so there's no need for hardwire connections between the intrusion detection panels and the access appliances.

A reasonably scaled central station generally will have monitoring packages that take the raw data coming in from the premises equipment and then load balance it across all of the monitoring operators.

"On a typical PACS, I need to load software onto a client's computer [to manage the PACS]," he said. That means the PACS is accessible only from that particular PC or laptop. "With S2, you don't have that issue," he said. "Basically, it's a download via web browser. I don't have to upgrade client machines or software."

Moss added that the ability to integrate Mercury panels with S2's products also allows for some companies to invest in solid-state access control systems, which have a higher mean time between failure. One of the products that S2 has offered is a system called the S2 Netbox. It's designed for small and mid-sized organizations, where the access control "server" is fully solid state - meaning no moving parts like fans or spinning hard drives to fail.
